On August 1, the 24,116 TEU ultra-large container ship built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. of China Shipbuilding Group for Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) was successfully docked at Changxing Shipbuilding Base, setting another world record for ultra-large container ship construction by Hudong-Zhonghua.
China is leading the world in the construction of ultra-large container ships by building the first container ship of huge size so far.
The vessel is 399.99 meters in length, 61.5 meters in width and 33.2 meters in depth, and can carry a record 24,116 containers at the same time. It is the world’s largest container ship in terms of packing capacity and is a veritable monster at sea.

It is equipped with a hybrid scrubber tower desulfurization unit that meets IMO Tier II emission requirements, energy-saving ducts, a large diameter propeller and an energy-saving bow. First of all, the bubble drag reduction system is adopted, which reduces energy consumption and CO2 emission by about 3-4%. It reduces about 6,000 tons of carbon emissions per year. A shaft belt generator system has also been adopted, reducing fuel consumption and optimizing the efficiency index.
In addition, assuming that the main scale is maintained, the superstructure, radar mast and other related designs have been optimized according to the owner’s operating route characteristics.
The type of vessel is registered with DNV and has independent intellectual property rights. The first production vessel was docked on August 1 and will be completed and delivered within one year.
